Can you introduce yourself?
Hello, I am Manal and I founded Manal Paris in 2018, which is an ethical and ecological jewelry house. We make all our jewelry from recycled gold and responsibly sourced precious stones in our Parisian workshop.
We specialize in weddings and offer a first collection of ethical and ecological engagement rings.
What is your background? And how did you end up in the world of jewelry?
I am an engineer by training, I worked for 5 years in the nuclear industry and it was in 2018 that I realized a need for new designers and to offer young couples who were getting married unique creations that resemble them, and therefore tailor-made.
What are the stages of manufacturing a Manal Paris jewel?
Our first manufacturing step is the creation of a 3D model with our model maker. Then we will melt the gold, which comes from old jewelry that is recycled and refined to be reused and melted again. Then the jeweler will proceed to the catch-up step, that is to say, to give the final finishes to the jewel. The setter will come to fix the precious stones to the jewel and then the polisher will come to polish to give its shine to the jewel.
Where do the raw materials come from?
We only use 18 carat recycled gold, which is gold that comes from old jewelry that has already been used. And so it is gold that has already been extracted that is melted down to be used again.
Our precious stones are labeled according to two labels. The first is the Responsible Jewelry Council which is a guarantee regarding the origin of the stones and the way in which they were extracted from the mines and our diamonds are certified according to the Kimberley process which ensures that they do not finance armed conflicts and do not use child labor and therefore all our diamonds come from Russia.
Why Art Deco? What were your inspirations?
I draw a lot of inspiration from the art deco style which is the style of the 10s and it is a style that was passed down to me by my grandmother who is passionate about art deco jewelry and a jewelry collector.
We draw inspiration from this vintage and timeless style which we then refine to modernize the creations and we use pastel-colored stones to bring freshness and color to our creations.
The Nesf Daera collection in a few words?
The Nesf Daera collection is inspired by art deco and more precisely by Moroccan art deco. I myself come from Rabat, Morocco, which is littered with magnificent art deco buildings and this is the main inspiration for the Nesf Daera collection.
Any advice for those who want to live their passion but don’t dare to take the plunge?
Do what you love because when you do what you love you do it well.
